PDRN: the star active of Korean skincare, explained simply
In short
- PDRN is a DNA fragment, traditionally extracted from salmon, now also plant-derived.
- In skincare, it helps skin look bouncier, smoother and more radiant.
- It isn't the equivalent of in-clinic injections: expect gradual results, not dramatic ones.
- Very well tolerated, it also suits sensitive skin.
If you follow K-beauty at all, you can't have missed it: PDRN in serums, toners, masks and pads. This active, which started out in Korean aesthetic clinics, became the most sought-after ingredient of the moment in just a few months.
It also comes with a slightly intriguing reputation as “salmon DNA”. Let's sort out what's true, what's exaggerated, and what you can really expect from it.
What it is
PDRN stands for polydeoxyribonucleotide. Behind that mouthful: small, purified fragments of DNA. Originally they were extracted from salmon or trout milt, hence the nickname.
Today, more and more brands use plant-derived or biotech versions. On an INCI list, PDRN usually appears as Sodium DNA. If the source matters to you (plant-based lifestyle, fish allergy), check the brand's product information.
Where its reputation comes from
In Korea, PDRN is first known as a clinic treatment, injected by professionals to improve skin quality. Skincare brands then brought the ingredient into products you apply yourself.
Let's be clear: a serum doesn't do the job of an injection. Applied to the surface, PDRN works on the outer layers of the skin. That's already a lot, as long as your expectations are realistic.
What you can expect
Bouncier skin. PDRN helps the skin hold on to water. It looks plumper and feels more supple to the touch.
Smoother texture and a brighter complexion, especially on tired or dull skin.
Skin that bounces back better after stress: sun, cold, exfoliation, too little sleep.
What it won't do: erase deep wrinkles, reshape the jawline or replace sunscreen, which remains the number one anti-ageing step.
Who is it for?
- skin that's starting to lose firmness or radiance, often from 30 onwards;
- dehydrated skin that feels tight despite moisturiser;
- sensitive skin that can't tolerate retinol: PDRN is a gentle alternative;
- anyone who wants a “glow boost” before an event.
Which format to choose
A serum is the most effective format, because it's the most concentrated. The Medicube PDRN Pink Collagen Exosome Shot Serum combines PDRN and collagen.
A gel toner for a plumping first layer: the AXIS-Y Triple PDRN Gel Toner.
Pads for a quick morning step: Medicube PDRN Pink Collagen Toner Pads.
A mask for an instant effect before a night out: the Medicube PDRN Pink Collagen Gel Mask or the Biodance Caviar PDRN Real Deep Mask, left on for several hours.
How to use it
Morning and evening, on clean skin, after toner and before moisturiser. One PDRN product is enough in a routine; a mask is a bonus, once or twice a week.
PDRN pairs easily with niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, ceramides and centella. With a retinal, keep PDRN for the morning and retinal for the evening.
How long does it take?
Comfort and bounce are noticeable within a few days. For texture and radiance, allow four to eight weeks of regular use. That's the normal pace of skin renewal, as we explain in how long before you see results.
