Dans quel ordre appliquer ses soins coréens ?

In what order should you apply Korean skincare?

In short

  • The order goes from thinnest to thickest. That is the whole logic.
  • Four steps are enough: cleanser, toner, cream, sunscreen.
  • Apply on still-damp skin, within thirty seconds.
  • One strong active per time of day. Never two.

It is the first question everyone asks when discovering K-beauty, and the answer is rarely in one place. You are told about a « ten-step routine », you look at your bathroom, and you close the tab.

Good news: the order is not an arbitrary rule invented to sell ten products. It follows a physical logic, and once you have understood it you no longer need to memorise it.

The rule that explains everything: thinnest to thickest

Every product you put on your skin has to get through whatever is already there. A watery texture cannot pass through a rich cream — it slides off and evaporates. The other way round works perfectly well.

Hence the rule: go from the most liquid to the thickest. The whole Korean routine follows from this. If you are hesitating between two products, just ask yourself which one is more fluid. That one goes first.

The evening routine, step by step

1. The cleansing oil or balm

Evenings only. Oil dissolves what is oily: make-up, sunscreen, the day's sebum. No water-based cleanser does this properly, which is exactly why double cleansing exists.

Apply to dry skin, massage for thirty seconds, then emulsify with a little warm water before rinsing.

2. The water-based cleanser

It removes what the oil lifted, plus sweat and dust. A gel or a gentle foam is enough. If your skin feels tight afterwards, your cleanser is too stripping — that is the most reliable sign there is.

3. The exfoliant, two to three times a week

Not every day. Never every day. Exfoliating toners with AHA, BHA or PHA unclog pores and smooth texture, but used daily they damage the skin barrier — and you end up with more spots than you started with.

4. The toner

Forget the astringent lotion we know in Europe. The Korean toner does not strip: it rehydrates and prepares the skin for what follows.

The gesture matters: apply it by hand, tapping, on still-damp skin. Cotton absorbs a good part of the product and irritates reactive skin.

5. The essence

This is the most characteristic K-beauty step, and the one most often skipped. An essence is more concentrated than a toner, thinner than a serum. Many brands make it their signature product.

If you were to add only one product to a classic Western routine, it would be this one.

6. The serum or ampoule

This is where you target. The serum treats one specific concern: dark spots, wrinkles, blemishes, redness.

One piece of advice that prevents a lot of irritation: one active serum per time of day. Vitamin C in the morning, retinal at night. Never both together when starting out.

7. Eye care

Optional, and clearly not urgent before thirty. The skin there is five times thinner: tap with the ring finger, do not rub, and stop at the bone.

8. The cream

The cream seals everything before it. Without it, the water you have just added evaporates within the hour.

The choice of texture matters more than the ingredient list: gel for oily skin, gel-cream for combination, rich cream or balm for dry skin. The same skin may need all three depending on the season.

9. The sleeping mask, once or twice a week

It replaces the cream, it is not added to it. Save it for evenings when the skin needs a push.

And in the morning?

Much shorter. A rinse with water or a very gentle cleanser, toner, serum if you use one in the morning, light cream, and sunscreen.

Sunscreen is the one non-negotiable step in this whole list. Without it, your dark-spot serums work at a loss: the sun remakes in a day what they take a month to fade. It is also, by far, the best-documented anti-ageing measure.

Quantity makes the protection: count about two fingers of product for the face and neck. That is far more than most people apply. Korean sunscreens solved exactly the problem that put everyone off — texture.

The three most common mistakes

Starting everything on the same day. If you buy five products and your skin reacts, you will never know which one is to blame. Introduce one a week.

Waiting for each layer to dry. It is the opposite: apply on still-damp skin, which traps water instead of letting it evaporate. You have about thirty seconds after cleansing.

Stacking actives. Vitamin C, retinal, exfoliating acids and niacinamide on the same evening is the guaranteed recipe for a shattered skin barrier and three weeks of redness.

How many steps, really?

The « ten steps » are a theoretical maximum, not an obligation. A routine that lasts often has four.

Morning: gentle cleanser, moisturiser, sunscreen. Evening: double cleanse, toner, cream. That is already better than 90 % of routines, and above all it is a routine you will keep.

K-beauty does not bet on a miracle product but on simple gestures repeated. Three products used every day beat eight used every other week.
