Double Cleansing: Why, How, and When to Skip It

In short

  • Oil dissolves oil: that's chemistry, not a trend.
  • Evenings only. In the morning, lukewarm water is enough.
  • Oil goes on dry skin, never on wet skin.
  • Pointless if you're wearing neither make-up nor sunscreen.

It's the step that raises the most eyebrows when you discover Korean skincare: washing your face twice in a row, starting with oil. On skin that's already shiny, the idea sounds counter-intuitive.

It isn't, and the reason is simple.

Why oil first

Two families of grime build up on your face over a day. The ones that dissolve in water — sweat, dust, pollution residue. And the ones that don't: sebum, make-up, sunscreen filters.

A foaming gel only removes the first kind. For the second you need something oily, because oils dissolve into each other. It's the same reason you degrease a pan with washing-up liquid and not with plain water.

So the cleansing oil or balm goes after the sebum lodged in the pore and the sunscreen filters that a gel would leave behind. The gel then comes along to remove the oil itself and whatever is left.

How to do it, step by step

On dry skin. This is the most common mistake: applying oil to an already wet face. Water stops the oil from making contact with the sebum, and the whole step becomes pointless. Dry hands, dry face.

Massage for one minute, working around the sides of the nose, the chin and the lash line if you're wearing make-up. A minute is a long time — time it once to see for yourself.

Then emulsify by adding a little lukewarm water while you keep massaging: the oil turns milky. That's the sign the surfactants have activated and the mixture will rinse away cleanly. A lot of people skip this step and end up with a greasy film.

Rinse, then move on to the water-based cleanser: gel, foam or milk depending on your skin. Thirty seconds is enough.

Pat dry, don't rub. And go straight to your toner within thirty seconds, while the skin is still damp.

Evenings only

Double cleansing is a once-a-day thing, in the evening. Never in the morning.

Overnight your skin hasn't done anything dirty: it has repaired itself, produced a little sebum and absorbed your products. Stripping it when you wake up undoes the night's work. Lukewarm water, possibly a very gentle cleanser if your skin is oily, and that's it.

When to skip it

Double cleansing isn't a daily obligation. It answers a specific need: removing what water won't take off.

If you've worn neither make-up nor sunscreen all day, a single gentle cleanse is enough. No need to add a step for the sake of it.

If your skin is very reactive or damaged, double cleansing may be too much. Start by cutting it back to two or three evenings a week.

And if you have eczema or rosacea, check with your dermatologist before adding steps.

Oil, balm or milk: which to choose

All three do the same job; the difference is comfort and texture.

Oil is the most fluid and the quickest to massage in, ideal for light make-up. Balm melts on contact with the skin, travels better and handles stubborn make-up well. Milk is the gentlest, and often preferred by dry or sensitive skin.

Oily skin can absolutely use an oil: look for "non-comedogenic" on the label and light oils such as grapeseed or jojoba. The cleansers in our selection are sorted by texture.

The mistakes that undo the whole thing

Scrubbing hard. Double cleansing works by dissolving, not by friction. Rubbing irritates and improves nothing.

Hot water. It strips the skin's protective film and leaves it red and tight. Lukewarm, always.

Make-up wipes. They spread more than they remove, and they drag at the skin. Keep them for emergencies, followed by a proper cleanse.

Waiting after you rinse. Clean skin loses water very quickly. Move on to the next step right away.

And then?

Properly cleansed skin absorbs everything that follows better — that's the whole reason for this step.

Follow with a toner or essence on damp skin, then your serum, then your moisturiser.
