Exosomes: the new K-beauty trend, decoded

After PDRN, it's the word on every new Korean bottle: exosomes. The term sounds very scientific, and that's no surprise: it comes from cell biology research. Here's what it really means when you find it in a skincare product.
What exosomes are
Exosomes are very small vesicles, a kind of bubble thousands of times smaller than a cell. Cells use them to exchange information: they pack proteins, lipids and other molecules into them, then send them to their neighbours.
The idea in skincare: use these messengers to encourage the skin to renew itself better.
Where the ones in your skincare come from
It's the first question that comes to mind. In Europe, regulations ban ingredients of human origin in cosmetics. The exosomes in skincare sold in France are therefore plant-derived (rose, centella, fruit…) or produced by fermentation with micro-organisms.
On the INCI list, they don't always appear under the word “exosome”. You'll more often see the plant's name followed by terms such as Callus Culture Extract or Ferment.
What they do for your skin
Finer skin texture. This is the most visible effect. The surface looks smoother and more even.
Visibly tighter pores, especially on the nose and cheeks.
A brighter complexion and skin that looks rested.
As with PDRN, keep your expectations realistic: an exosome product improves texture and radiance, but it doesn't replace a solid basic routine or sunscreen.
Why it sometimes tingles
Some exosome products, especially Korean “shots”, also contain spicules: tiny natural needles from marine sponges that create a tingling sensation when applied. That's intentional, and it fades within a few minutes.
The higher the number on the bottle, the more intense the formula and the stronger the tingling. If the sensation turns into burning or your skin stays red for more than an hour, rinse it off and use it less often.
2000, 7500 or 25000: which one to choose?

How to use it
In the evening, on clean, dry skin, after toner. Two to three times a week to begin with, then every evening if your skin handles it well.
